For over a decade, we’ve regularly heard the “five a day” message—we need to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables (400g) every day to maintain good nutritional health. Since the World Health Organisation (WHO) first made the recommendation in 20031, there have been a number of information campaigns and food labelling schemes around the world, designed to help consumers achieve a healthier diet.

However, a new report reveals that the message may not be getting through, with approximately nine out of every ten adults still falling short of the daily diet recommendation globally.

THE GLOBAL PHYTONUTRIENT REPORT

Fruits and vegetables are important for maintaining good health as they contain powerful phytonutrients. These contribute to eye, bone, joint and heart health as well as supporting your immune system and brain function.

But it isn’t just quantity that matters. You also need to consume a sufficient variety of colourful fruits and vegetables.

Last August the peer-reviewed British Journal of Nutrition published a report into the fruit and vegetable eating habits of people around the world, commissioned by the NUTRILITE Health Institute2. The report documented the staggering results of a study that revealed as many as 87% of adults are falling short of the WHO recommended serving of five fruits and vegetables a day.

To meet the WHO recommendation, most adults would need to at least double their current intake.

There are a number of reasons why this may be so. Modern busy lifestyles have had a major impact on our diets. Also, the cost and availability of high quality fruit and veg can be a challenge for some families.

But there are a few simple steps you can take to increase the quantity and variety of phytonutrients in your diet.
